Three killed in explosions in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan

At least three people have been killed and more than 18 people injured in three explosions in Jalalabad in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province.

It is reported that the intended target may have been a passing convoy of the Taliban in the provincial capital. It is the first attack in the province since the Taliban came into power in mid-August.

Nearly 30 more Americans evacuated from Afghanistan

Nearly 30 more Americans were evacuated from Afghanistan via a charter flight, the State Department announced Saturday.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement on Saturday that a Qatar Airways charter flight departed Kabul on Friday with 28 U.S. citizens and seven lawful permanent residents.

Girls excluded as Afghan secondary schools reopen

The Taliban have excluded girls from Afghan secondary schools, with only boys and male teachers allowed back into classrooms.

Schoolgirls told the BBC they were devastated not to be returning. “Everything looks very dark,” one said.

Taliban officials who seized power last month said they were working to reach a decision on the matter.

Many fear a return of the regime of the 1990s when the Taliban severely restricted girls’ and women’s rights.

Activists Protest Lack of Women’s Affairs Ministry

Activists said the removal of the ministry is against the Taliban’s promises on women’s rights to work and gain an education.

The announcement of the caretaker cabinet by the Taliban did not include the Ministry of Women Affairs, which operated during the former government. Now its building has been given to the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.
